Subject: [*] Summary of replies about cooling fans for Mac Plus
Enclosed are replies I received in response to my query about
cooling fans for the Mac Plus.
It looks like the Kensington fan is the most common, but I
haven't found a 220 V version yet.
Many thanks to all those who replied.

Greetings, Alun,
I have been the happy user of a Kensington fan for the Plus for nearly
six years. My Plus has run happily (even with an old-styly 1-Meg memory upgrade
that blocked the normal convection inside the case). The fan sits on top of the
Plus and includes convienient switches and plugs for the CPU and a hard disk and
whatever else you want (one extra plug). It has been running quitely and my Mac
is quite cool.
Good luck.

They are a supplier of Mac repair parts, and they also
carry a neat little fan which mounts inside your Plus
with double stick tape up behind the vent slots near
the handle, and clips onto the power leads between the
on-off switch and the power supply, so as not to burden
the Mac's supply. They supply clip-on leads, so no
soldering is necessary. Looks like just the ticket, and
is a much neater solution than the external fans I've
seen. I forget the price, something around US$30, I
think. Ask for Jean Sorensen. She has been most helpful
to me in the past.
Cheers-
Tom

I have installed two types of cooling fans in Mac Plusses. The first is a
Piezoelectric fan that runs off the line voltage (110V) and is pointed at
the power supply board. It works OK, but does not provide a large amount
of air. The second kind is a 2.5 inch squDC Boxer Fan. These run off the
12V supply and provide a large flow of air. There is an excellent description
of installation of these items in the book 'Mac Repair and Upgrade Secrets'
by Larry Pina ISBN 0-672-48452-8. I have this book and would transcribe some
info from it if you need.

You don't even need to open the Mac if you would
rather not. If the screen side is facing you, the
power supply/video sweep bd. is mounted on the left
side. I have purchase an inexpensive table fan for
under $10.00, and aimed it at the vents on this side
and found this to be enough to keep it cool, even in
warm weather. Otherwise, you need to get a long
handled "TORX" screwdriver and remove the five screws
(two at bottom, two in top handle, and one inside
battery box.). The best place to mount is inside the
case under the top handle vents. Note: If you are
too close to the CRT (picture tube) you will get
magnetic interference or distortions in the picture.
Power can be tapped from the p.s./v.s. bd. or the
inside of the A.C. connector.

We've used a bunch of Kensington fans (which slip over the top of a Plus) at
our office for a number of years (as well as on my two home machines). They
have been very reliable. The rate at which we were going through power
supplies before we started using them, compared to the rate after (which was
near zero) convinced me that they were money well spent.
At the time we bought our last ones, the fans were about $100 US each by mail
order from Kensington (who advertise regularly in both MacWorld and MacUser).

Alun,
I used a product from Kenisington called "System Saver" which was a combined
fan and surge suppresor for the Mac Plus. It did not require any wiring
or anything inside the case, but instead fit in the handle on top of the
Plus. I was very pleased with the product and only got ride of it when
I sold
my Plus.
In the states it is carried by all the Mac mail-order places. I don't
know if you're able to order from them easily overseas.
Good luck,

Why don't you check with a Apple dealer and buy a fan designed for a Mac SE.
Otherwise, you could check in Macworld or Macweek for advertizing at the back
of these magazines by small companies. I would prefer a Apple product.

I have a Kensington Fan that attaches over the handle on top and moves
air through the vents under the handle. It also has a surge protector
and front panel switches to power up the mac/fan and something else,
like a HD/printer. It is not too loud, but you can tell when it is on.
I got it from MacWarehouse for around $60, and they will probably still
have it.

Subj: FANS
My power supply have been changed or repaires maybe 8 times. I have an original
1984 PLUS updated all the way to 4MB. At one time I wanted to install a fan but
after reading in Macworld I decided not to. I think the problem was dust that
could sucked in by the fan. There were some external fans that you putted at
the top of the Mac and that were supposed to draw the hot air out. Check in
Macworld I saw something about that. It could be a long search since they have
published since 1984. Also installing any gimmick inside a Mac Plus isn't
recommended since it was not designed for that.
The new power supply for the Plus is more resistant than the original ones.
Good luck and send a summary to info-mac. At the time when there were only
Plus, SE and II that question was often addressed in magazines. Someone will
certainly find an answer.

We have fans that fit in the handle gap on the top of the Mac. They work
dandy. We got ours from MacConnection by mail order.
